Meet Poppy: The Adorable Pygmy Hippo with a Powerful Message

I have family in VA, so I caught this story on the local level, and really found it uplifting.  I love a good news story, especially when it has to do with critically endangered animals, so I thought you might like to hear more about it.   Happy Friday- Enjoy!

Something really magical is happening at the Metro Richmond Zoo in Virginia. A tiny, wide-eyed pygmy hippopotamus named Poppy is stealing hearts — and maybe, just maybe, reminding us of what’s at stake in the fight against extinction.

Born in early 2025 to mom Iris, Poppy has become a viral sensation thanks to the zoo’s 24/7 “Poppy Cam” livestream. People around the world are watching this rare, endangered species take her first wobbly steps and splash through shallow pools with innocent joy.

But behind the cuteness is a powerful truth: there are estimated to be fewer than 2,500 pygmy hippos left in the wild.

“We hope Poppy can become an ambassador—not just for her species, but for the countless animals on the brink of being lost forever,” said Jim Andelin, director of the Metro Richmond Zoo, in an interview with People Magazine.

Unlike her more famous cousin, the common hippopotamus, the pygmy hippo is a quiet forest-dweller, elusive and shy by nature. Native to the rainforests of West Africa, these gentle creatures are threatened by deforestation, hunting, and habitat loss. And if we’re not careful, Poppy’s story could follow the same tragic path as the quagga.

⚰️ The Ghost of the Quagga

Once roaming freely across South Africa, the quagga was a subspecies of the plains zebra, known for its striking half-striped, half-solid coat. By the late 1800s, it was gone — hunted to extinction and declared officially extinct in 1883. Only one photograph remains. One.

Like the pygmy hippo, the quagga was a unique relative of a more common species. Its loss wasn’t just a tragedy for biodiversity — it was a warning.

We can’t bring the quagga back (though scientists have tried), but we can fight like hell to protect species like the pygmy hippo while there’s still time.
