Frequently Asked Questions
Have any questions about our range of essentials? We’re happy to help.
Is “Speciologie” a word? Why Speciologie vs Speciology?
Actually,“Speciologie” (spee-shee ol-uh-jee) is our word, is trademarked and doesn’t
appear in Webster’s Dictionary (we would like to think that Webster hasn’t caught up). The meaning: a fascination with the lost species of modern history paired with an interest in habitat and biodiversity preservation.
What is the study of species called?
The study of
species is captured by a variety of terms:
Phylogenetics: the study of the evolutionary relationships among organisms
Taxonomy: the identification, description, naming and classification of organisms
Systematics: the study of diversity and evolutionary relationships of organisms
Why do you feature the lost species of modern history? Why not prehistoric species?
Speciologie’s inherent "gone but not forgotten" message is a reminder of the importance of preserving earth’s habitat for all species amidst mankind’s impact.
Unlike prehistoric extinction events, the extinctions of modern history are largely induced by the negative impact of human civilization on biodiversity via climate change, habitat destruction, toxic compound use, and invasive species introduction.
Are your 1800s museum illustrations sourced from museum archives?
Prior to the widespread use of photography in the mid-1800’s, museums featured animal illustrations that spawned a sense of wonder about the biodiversity of the earth. Rather than search museum archives
(many of which are uncatalogued), Speciologie commissioned itsillustrations
with an established wildlife illustrator – Tim Jeffs.
What “science-based conservation” organizations does Speciologie support?
With every purchase Speciologie donates 5%. To date Speciologie has supported the International Union for the Conservation of
Nature (IUCN). The IUCN is the world’s largest global network of government and civil society organizations dedicated promoting wildlife conservation.
Are your products made from organic cotton?
Our tote is made from organic cotton. Our other products are made from responsibly grown cotton and, unlike many sportswear producers, we avoid fabrics made from petrochemical extracts. Most
of our T-shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies are 100% cotton, with the exception being the gray heather products which tend have a slight blend of polyester to achieve heather dying results.
